Huckleberries are dark purple, about the size of a blueberry, with a unique tartness.  They grow wild and are usually found in small patches in remote areas.  They are most    abundant in the mountains of Montana.

Most locals keep the places where huckleberries grow their secret.  They are so much in demand for their delicate, full-flavored taste, and the limited supply makes them all the more desirable.

The opportunity to pick them in early fall is based upon a year’s climate, rain and sun.  They usually grow in higher elevations of the mountains where the underbrush is open to allow sun to reach them.

The native Indians considered them a vital food supply for attaining good health.  Other people seek them because they believe that huckleberries help to improve eyesight.  Whatever the desire, the pursuit for them becomes a unique challenge.

Producers hire pickers and pay them by the gallon.  The pickers search and locate the best patches and are selfish about their location !

This seems like a simple procedure, except that huckleberries are also loved by bears, who may beat the pickers to the berry patch or interrupt picking.

After the handpicked berries are delivered to the producers, they are cleaned, washed and processed into various huckleberry products with a minimum of additives and no preservatives.

There are very few producers of products made from these delicate, tasty berries.  

Huckleberries are desired by all who have been exposed to the berry as a mountain specialty.  They are truly wild and rare.
